Endocrinology

The endocrinology department treats diseases of hormone-releasing glands: these glands may produce too much or too little hormone, or the glands may have changed shape (for example, nodules on the gland). A hormone is a substance released to the blood by a gland that affects the functioning of an organ somewhere in the body. The glands that make these hormones are the pancreas (pancreas), thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, parathyroid and gonads.
You can also see us for related metabolic disorders such as overweight/obesity, osteoporosis and high cholesterol.

What can we help you with?

Our department can help you in the diagnosis and follow-up of diabetes and related metabolic disorders (obesity, hypercholesterolemia), as well as diseases related to hormone function (thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pituitary, gonads).

The doctor provides examinations, makes a diagnosis and treats with medication. An endocrinologist does not operate, but works with a surgeon if necessary. Sint-Trudo Hospital is operation base for our endocrinologists, affiliated with Endonet (Endocrinological Network Haspengouw). From here they are active in the wider region and are building a network of endocrinological care with the hospital as base. Cooperation with general practitioners, other doctor-specialists, paramedics, and the patient himself is central to the approach. The team also provides consultation in Borgloon and Heers in order to organize care as close to the patient as possible.

Our doctors are also active in az Vesalius (Tongeren and medical center Bilzen).

Diabetes

In diabetes mellitus, or diabetes, the pancreas produces too little or no insulin, resulting in too much sugar in the blood. After all, insulin is needed to absorb sugar into the body

The endocrinology department is recognized as a center for the NIHDI convention for self-monitoring and self-regulation of diabetes (diabetes convention) and for insulin pump treatment (pump convention). The department takes an active part in the diabetes care process and the preliminary process.

A specialized diabetes team of physicians, diabetes nurses, dieticians, a psychologist and a podiatrist provide multidisciplinary support for patients.

Thyroid gland

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ in the neck and produces thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is responsible for our "metabolism" and is essential for life. The thyroid gland can work too fast or too slow. This leads to a metabolism that is too fast or too slow.

The thyroid gland may also have changed shape: it has become too large (goiter, goiter) or has nodules. To detect and treat these nodules early, we work with a multidisciplinary team of doctors specializing in thyroid disorders, such as radiologists, pathologists, NKO surgeons and doctors specializing in nuclear medicine.

Hormone care

The range of hormone-producing organs and related disorders is very wide. It varies from relatively common disorders to rare disorders of the adrenal glands, pituitary glands, parathyroid glands,...
