Endocrinology

The endocrinology department treats diseases of glands that release hormones. These glands may produce too much or too little hormones, or they may change shape (nodules on the gland). We can also help you with related metabolic disorders such as obesity, osteoporosis and high cholesterol.

What can we help you with?

You can come to our endocrinology department for diagnosis and follow-up of diabetes and other metabolic disorders such as obesity and hypercholesterolemia. We also treat disorders of the endocrine glands such as the thyroid, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pituitary gland and reproductive glands. An endocrinologist usually treats with medication; for any surgery, the doctor works with a surgeon.

Diabetes

The endocrinology service is recognized as a center for the NIHDI convention for self-monitoring and self-regulation of diabetes (diabetes convention) and for insulin pump treatment (pump convention). A specialized diabetes team of doctors, diabetes nurses, dieticians, a psychologist and a podiatrist provides multidisciplinary support.

Obesity

Obesity is a chronic form of being overweight. In obesity, there is too much fatty tissue relative to your bone and muscle mass.

Hormone care

Hormones are substances released into the bloodstream by glands, influencing the function of organs elsewhere in the body. Hormone-producing glands include the pancreas, thyroid, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, parathyroid glands, and reproductive glands. Hormonal disorders are diverse and can range from common to rare.

Thyroid

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the neck that produces thyroid hormone. This hormone plays a vital role in regulating metabolism. To detect and treat thyroid disorders at an early stage, we work with a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including radiologists, pathologists, ENT surgeons, and nuclear medicine physicians.

Endonet

Our endocrinologists are affiliated with Endonet (Endocrinological Network Haspengouw), which allows them to operate across a wider region and develop a network of endocrinological care from within the hospital. Close collaboration with GPs, other medical specialists, paramedics, and patients is essential. To bring care as close to the patient as possible, the team also holds consultations in Borgloon and Heers.

In addition, our physicians are also active in AZ Vesalius (Tongeren and the Bilzen medical centre).
