Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation is a procedure that increases breast volume and creates a fuller shape. This can be done for aesthetic reasons or to restore breast volume after, for example, weight loss, pregnancy or breastfeeding. The plastic surgeon places great importance on matching the size of the breasts to your body proportions in order to achieve a balanced result.

Why choose breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is performed for aesthetic reasons.

In some cases, breast augmentation is combined with a breast lift or lipofilling.

Preparing for the procedure

The plastic surgeon uses 3D software to simulate the expected result of the procedure. The final outcome may differ from this simulation, but it provides important information to assess whether a certain volume suits your body and leads to a natural result.

How is the procedure performed?

Breast augmentation can be carried out using your own body tissue (lipofilling) or with a breast implant.

There are different types of breast implants. The main differences concern the filling (saline vs silicone), the surface texture and the shape of the implant (round vs teardrop-shaped). During the consultation, it is discussed which implant is most suitable for you.

The breast implant can be placed above or below the chest muscle, depending on your body type and the quality of the overlying skin.

Any surgical procedure carries a risk of complications such as bleeding, infection or wound problems.

After breast augmentation with implants, there are some additional points you should be aware of:

  • A prosthesis is a foreign material to the body. The body forms a capsule around each implant. In rare cases this capsule may, over time, become thicker. This may cause irregular tightening (sometimes felt as a cord under the skin), changes in shape and (in severe cases) also feel painful. In such situations, it may be decided to partially or completely remove the capsule.
  • The terms BII (Breast Implant Illness) and ASIA (Autoimmune Syndrome Induced Adjuvant) are used to describe a wide range of symptoms that may occur after surgery in which breast implants are placed. These conditions are rare.
  • The safety of foreign materials is a priority. Increasing attention is being paid to the development of BIA-ALCL (Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma), a malignant condition of the lymph nodes that occurs in a very small group of women with breast implants.
  • In some cases, a breast implant may shift slightly from its original position. The breast may then look different or become less symmetrical, and this can sometimes cause discomfort. If you have any doubts or notice changes, it is best to contact your doctor.

A well-considered decision-making process, the choice of implants and good follow-up after the procedure are therefore crucial.

Recovery and aftercare

In breast augmentation without a lift, the scar is placed in the breast fold. When the implant is positioned under the muscle, this may cause slightly more discomfort during the first few days. Appropriate pain relief will be provided. After the procedure, you will need to wear a supportive bra day and night for several weeks.
