Sint-Trudo Ziekenhuis is building the future

To stand still is to regress, a saying that certainly applies to a hospital in a rapidly evolving healthcare industry. The same is true for Sint-Trudo Ziekenhuis. To continue fulfilling its important healthcare mission in the future, the hospital is further expanding its campus with a new emergency room, parking lot and additional consultation rooms. It involves an investment of 21 million euros.

Cindy Monard, general director, provides framework for the future plans: "The mission of Sint-Trudo is contained in our motto "expert and close by".  Our main driving force in everything we do will always be people-oriented care: warm care, with an eye for the person behind the patient and his relatives. They must be able to call on our expertise in complete confidence. It is therefore necessary that we continue to grow as a hospital. We must look ahead into the future and invest today in our people, but also in our buildings."

Building plans

"In recent years, many renovations have already taken place at and around the hospital, just think of the head- and neck center, the renovated labour ward and dialysis center, the expansions at radiology, the investments in lab equipment and a completely new clean room in our pharmacy. Moreover, with the financial support of Fighters Against Cancer, we were able to open a unique pet pavilion at our hospital in June," said Koen De Coninck, chief financial director.

Campus with new emergency

"Two years ago, we bought the plot directly to the left of the hospital and started renovating the building on Rummenweg, which has since housed our administrative services. We already made extra space in the hospital for care, where we are now setting up a completely new hyperambulatory day hospital. In September, work will begin on the current cafeteria, where an attractive brasserie "Bar Bouffe" will open its doors in November.

The biggest feat, however, will be a completely new emergency department at the rear of the building, with an integrated general practitioners' out-of-hours station. This will allow us to manage the influx of patients much better. We expect government approval on this soon for our funding file. Because of this expansion, we will have to sacrifice our current visitor parking lot. The site to the left of the hospital will then become the new visitor parking lot, with a walkway connecting the entire campus. The consultation block will also be completely renovated within a few years," concludes Koen De Coninck.

Sustainability

"We pursue a sustainable policy with attention and respect for the environment. This also means that we have thoroughly examined how we will operate in the future and what is needed to achieve this. The greenery in the area is an important factor in this, but also the possibilities for e.g. solar panels and green roofs. All our plans ultimately revolve around our social task as a healthcare institution, which we want to continue to fulfill for our region.",cludes Cindy Monard.
