The nephrology department has a specialized team of doctors, nurses, social workers and dietitians to treat and guide you when you are confronted with kidney disease.

• Consultation
  Here the diagnosis, ongoing follow-up and drug treatment are done by the doctor (nephrologist). The consultation is often followed by a blood or urine test and sometimes an ultrasound scan. Consultations are possible in the hospitals of Sint-Truiden, Tongeren and Tienen.
• Hospital stay
  Patients with kidney disease or patients on dialysis who become seriously ill will be hospitalized in the renal ward.
• Blood dialysis (hemodialysis)
  Most patients undergo hemodialysis in our dialysis department at Sint-Trudo Hospital in Sint-Truiden and some in our dialysis department at Vesalius Hospital in Tongeren. Dialysis can take place in the morning or afternoon as well as in the evening. There is also the possibility of performing hemodialysis at home, if the patient's condition allows it.
• Abdominal dialysis (peritoneal dialysis)
  Patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis carry out their treatment at home and come for check-ups once a month at the dialysis centre of Sint-Trudo Hospital.
• Kidney transplant
  Kidney transplants are performed at UZ Leuven (Gasthuisberg). The good cooperation with UZ Leuven allows for a rapid exchange of data. Three months after the kidney transplant, patients can be followed up again at Sint-Trudo Hospital.
• Plasmapheresis
  This rare form of removal and replacement of blood plasma can also be performed at Sint-Trudo Hospital.
