Gastroenterology

The gastroenterology department specialises in detecting, diagnosing, and treating disorders of the digestive system, including the oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. We work closely with other departments to provide comprehensive care.

What can we help you with?

You can visit this department for conditions related to the digestive system. Do you have any symptoms? During a consultation, the doctor will listen to your concerns and ask targeted questions to identify the cause. Further tests may be required to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

Prevention is key. That’s why we also conduct screening tests for certain cancers and provide advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle to help prevent digestive problems.

Examination

An endoscopic examination provides an accurate view of your digestive system. Using an endoscope, the inside of various organs can be observed. Follow the link below to learn more about the procedure and the different types, such as colonoscopy, gastroscopy, ERCP and video capsule endoscopy.

Biopsies

To achieve an accurate diagnosis, a biopsy may be performed. This involves removing a small sample of tissue during a minor procedure or an endoscopy for microscopic examination. It can also help determine the severity of the condition.

What do we treat?

Our department manages a wide range of conditions. This includes diagnosing the cause of anaemia, functional disorders of the digestive system, gastrointestinal bleeding and oncological conditions.

Inflammatory bowel disseases (IBD)

IBD, or inflammatory bowel diseases, is a collective term for chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. The two most common forms are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. These chronic conditions are characterised by periods of flare-ups and remissions. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, relieving symptoms and preventing relapses.
