Removal of the tonsils
Plan your appointment
What are tonsils?
The tonsils are two small, oval structures on either side of the throat. They are part of the immune system and help protect the body against infections, especially during childhood. In some people, the tonsils themselves frequently become inflamed or cause other problems.
How is the procedure performed?
Tonsil removal is usually carried out under general anaesthetic. The tonsils are surgically removed through the mouth. Different techniques may be used, such as cutting, using heat (cauterising) or using a laser. Stitches are usually not required, as the wound heals naturally.
Aftercare and recovery
Recovery usually takes one to two weeks. You may experience a sore throat, mild fever, tiredness and difficulty eating or drinking. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Avoid spicy, acidic or hard foods that may irritate the throat. Your doctor will prescribe pain relief to help manage your symptoms. Ensure you get enough rest and avoid strenuous activity.
