Removal of the thyroid (thyroidectomy)
Plan your appointment
Why is thyroid surgery needed?
Thyroid surgery may be necessary in the case of a benign or malignant swelling, or when an overproduction of thyroid hormones cannot be controlled with medication. An enlarged thyroid gland that presses on the windpipe or oesophagus may also need to be partially or completely removed.
How is the procedure performed?
The operation is carried out under general anaesthetic. Through an incision in the neck, part or all of the thyroid is removed. Great care is taken to preserve the vocal cord nerves and parathyroid glands.
Recovery and aftercare
After the operation, you usually stay in the hospital for one to two days. Your neck may feel somewhat swollen or tender, and swallowing may feel different for a while.
If the entire thyroid is removed, lifelong medication is required to replace the missing hormones.
