Lower eyelid surgery (plastic surgery)

Lower eyelid surgery is a procedure that treats excess skin and/or sagging fatty tissue under the eye. This can reduce a tired appearance and make the eye contour look smoother again.

When is lower eyelid surgery recommended?

Common concerns include:

  • Excess skin under the eye
  • Sagging fatty tissue ('eye bags')
  • A tired or aged appearance
  • Difficulty closing the eyes, in some cases

Dark circles can also play a role, for example when the skin is very thin and the underlying muscle becomes visible.

How does the treatment work?

During lower eyelid surgery, excess skin is removed through an incision just below the lash line. If needed, the sagging fatty tissue is corrected via an incision on the inside of the eyelid.

If there is also a loss of volume under the eye, the procedure can be combined with lipofilling.

An additional technique to treat dark circles is nanofat grafting. In this procedure, a small ammount of fat is removed, processed and injected under the skin.

Any surgical procedure carries a risk of complications such as bleeding, infection or wound healing problems. After lower eyelid surgery, there are a few specific points to be aware of:

  • Ectropion: the eyelid pulls slightly outward
  • Incomplete eye closure: this can occur if too much skin is removed

For this reason, the procedure is always performed with great care and only a limited amount of skin is removed. Be sure to inform your surgeon in advance if you suffer from dry or watery eyes, or if you have previously had eye surgery.

Recovery and aftercare

After the procedure, you will receive pain relief. Bruising around the eyelids is normal during the first few days and may spread towards the cheeks before gradually disappearing.
