Cost of hospitalization

Many different factors determine the cost of your hospitalization. The health insurance fund, which is mandatory in Belgium, reimburses most of it. This is done directly between the hospital and the health insurance fund. In addition, you also pay a portion yourself. That is the copayment or personal share. You also pay for any supplements. The final amount on the bill is the amount you have to pay yourself.

With the admission statement, you as a patient make a number of choices that affect the cost of your admission. Don't hesitate to ask questions about the choices you have to make!

Admission for one or more days in hospital

When you are hospitalized, the choice of room is critical. 

If you choose a single room you pay on top of the legal fixed costs: 

• a fixed room supplement
• all physicians involved may charge a fee supplement . That fee supplement amounts to 150% in Sint-Trudo.
  • Concrete example: If the services of your doctors amount to 1,000 euros and the health insurance fund intervenes for 900 euros, as a patient you pay 100 euros of copayment (1,000 - 900 euros). This is the contribution you always pay yourself as a patient. In this example, you pay 100 euros for the same care in a double room versus 1,600 euros in a single room. In the latter case, you pay that 100 euros, plus the 150% fee supplement, which here amounts to 1,500 euros. This supplement does not go entirely to the doctor himself, but is used to invest in quality and care innovation.

A hospitalization insurance sometimes intervenes (partially) for these supplements. Be sure to check with your insurance company about this. 

If you opt for a two-person room, then the quality of care remains the same, but you do not pay for supplements. 

Other factors that determine the cost of your stay include the length of your stay, contingencies, complications, certain medications or implants and miscellaneous charges.

Consultation with a specialist

When you come for a consultation with a specialist, the convention status of the doctor is important. (List convention status doctors) 

Conventioned doctors always apply the legally established NIHDI rates and may not go above them. 

Note: when you are admitted, even conventioned doctors can charge up to 150% fee supplement when you choose a single room.
