Rhinomanometry

Rhinomanometry is an examination used to measure the passage of air through the nose. The aim is to assess how much air flows through your nose and how much resistance occurs during inhalation and exhalation.

When is a rhinomanometry needed?

This examination is often carried out in case of:

  • A feeling of nasal blockage without a clear cause
  • Breathing difficulties through the nose
  • Suspected structural abnormalities (such as a deviated septum)
  • A planned nasal surgery, to estimate its effect

How does the examination work?

  1. A nasal piece is placed in one nostril while the other is closed.
  2. You breathe calmly in and out through a mask.
  3. Air pressure and air flow are measured while you breathe normally.
  4. The examination is then repeated on the other side of the nose.

Sometimes the examination is also performed before and after administration of a nasal spray, to measure the effect of medication.
