Oesophagael manometry is an examination that allows us to accurately assess what happens during swallowing. The test visualises the functioning of your oesophagus.

What is oesophageal manometry?
Oesophageal manometry is a test used to measure the muscle function of the oesophagus. A thin tube with sensors is gently inserted through the nose into the oesophagus. This allows us to see how well the muscles in your oesophagus contract during swallowing.
Why is a oesophageal manometry performed?
This test may be carried out if you:
- Regularly feel that food gets stuck
- Need to swallow several times before food passes down
- Experience pain when swallowing
It may also be useful if there is a suspected disorder of the oesophageal muscles.
How does the test work?
- A thin tube is inserted through your nose into your oesophagus.
- You sit upright and are given small sips of water.
- The sensors in the tube measure the pressure and movement of your oesophageal muscles.
- After the test, the tube is removed straight away.
Oesophageal manometry is safe and usually well tolerated. You may eat and drink normally afterwards.
