Balance test

If you suffer from dizziness or balance problems, a balance test may be necessary. During this examination we check whether your symptoms are related to the balance organ in the inner ear.

When is a balance test necessary?

A balance test is initiated in case of symptoms such as:

  • Spinning sensations or a light-headed feeling
  • Unsteady walking or difficulty keeping your balance
  • Loss of balance, sometimes accompanied by falls
  • Dizziness in combination with hearing loss or tinnitus

How does the examination proceed?

We start with a short intake interview. The doctor listens to your symptoms and asks a few targeted questions. This gives us a clear picture of your situation.

Next, your balance will be tested through a few simple exercises, such as walking in a straight line with your eyes closed or following a moving point with your eyes.

Specific balance tests

Depending on your symptoms, we may carry out additional tests:

  • Videonystagmography: During this examination, you wear special goggles with a camera. We record your eye movements while stimulating the balance organ, for example with warm or cold air in your ear.
  • Positional tests: The doctor puts your head in specific positions to trigger vertigo. This helps detect BPPV (loose crystals).
  • Balance platform test: In some cases we test your balance on a movable platform.

After the examination

The doctor will discuss the results of the examination with you. If treatment is required, this may consist of physical therapy, medication or a referral for further tests.
