Tracheostomy
A tracheostomy is an operation in which an opening is made in the windpipe (trachea). Through this opening, a tube (cannula) can be inserted to support breathing.

When is a tracheostomy needed?
A tracheostomy may be required:
- When artificial ventilation is needed for a longer period
- In cases of obstruction of the upper airways (for example due to a tumour or swelling)
- With certain neurological conditions that make swallowing or breathing difficult
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is usually carried out under general anaesthetic. Through a small incision in the neck, the windpipe is reached and a tube is inserted. This tube may remain in place temporarily or for a longer period, depending on the cause.
Living with a tracheostomy
A tracheostomy requires specific care. The tube needs to be checked and cleaned regularly to prevent blockage. Speaking, eating and drinking may change. The care team will guide the patient and family in dealing with the new situation.
