Surgery on the vocal cords (microlaryngoscopy)

A microlaryngoscopy is an endoscopic procedure of the larynx, in which the surgeon can examine and treat abnormalities of the vocal cords using fine instruments.

When is a microlaryngoscopy needed?

The procedure may be indicated in case of:

  • Hoarseness or voice problems that do not improve spontaneously
  • Benign lesions such as polyps, nodules or cysts
  • Suspected malignant lesion
  • Narrowing or scar formation of the vocal cords

How is the procedure performed?

The operation is carried out under general anaesthetic. A laryngoscope is inserted through the mouth to visualize the vocal cords. Using a microscope and fine instruments, the surgeon can precisely remove or treat the lesions.

Recovery and aftercare

After a microlaryngoscopy, the voice is often temporarily hoarse. Gentle voice use and sometimes complete voice rest for a good recovery. The result is monitored during follow-up appointments with the doctor.
