Scar correction (plastic surgery)
Scars are part of the skin's natural healing process. Sometimes, however, a scar may heal less well or cause discomfort. Scar correction can help make a scar less visible, more supple or less painful.
When is scar correction useful?
Scar correction may be considered when a scar:
- has become thickened, hard or wider
- is visibly bothersome
- causes pain, itching or discomfort
- restricts movement
How is the procedure carried out?
Depending on the type of scar, treatment may include:
- surgical removal of the scar followed by re-suturing
- laser treatment (for red, irregular or rigid scars)
- surgical rearrangement of small skin flaps to allow better healing
- injections, silicone therapy or pressure therapy
The plastic surgeon will discuss in advance what you can expect and which results are realistic.
What after the treatment?
A new scar needs about 12 to 18 months to heal fully. During the first few weeks, redness and sensitivity may occur. Proper scar care is essential to achieve the best possible healing. This may include applying a scar ointment or silicone gel and protecting the scar from sunlight.
There is no such thing as a completely invisible scar, but achieving a finer, more subtle line is usually possible.
