Repair of the eardrum
The eardrum is a thin membrane that separates the outer ear from the middle ear. It plays an important role in hearing and protects the middle ear from dirt, water and infection. A small hole or tear in the eardrum often heals on it's own, but sometimes surgical repair is needed. This operation is also called a myringoplasty.
Plan your appointment
Why is a myringoplasty necessary?
Closing the eardrum can:
- Improve hearing
- Help prevent recurrent ear infections
- Make the ear more resistant to water and external iritation
How is the procedure performed?
The hole in the eardrum is closed with a small piece of the body's own tissue, usually taken from the skin. The operation is generally performed under general anaesthetic.
Aftercare and recovery
After the operation a dressing is placed in the ear and sometimes also around the ear. It is important to keep water out of your ear until the eardrum has completely healed, which usually takes a few weeks. Your doctor will check whether the new eardrum has attached properly and whether your hearing has improved.
