Lymph node biopsy in the neck

A lymph node biopsy is a procedure in which one or more lymph nodes in the neck are removed or partly examined. This is done when a lymph node is enlarged or when the cause of the swelling is unclear. The biopsy helps to establish the correct diagnosis.

How is the procedure performed?

Depending on the location and size of the lymph node, the biopsy is performed under local or general anaesthetic. The doctor makes a small incision in the neck and removes either a sample or the entire node. The tissue is then examined in the laboratory.

Aftercare and recovery

The wound is stitched and covered with a plaster. Some pain, swelling or bruising may occur, but this usually disappears quickly. You will receive instructions on how to care for the wound.

Results

The results of the tissue examination are usually available within one to two weeks. Your doctor will discuss them with you and check whether further treatment is needed.
