Labiaplasty

A labiaplasty, also known as labial reduction, is a procedure in which the inner labia (labia minora) are reduced in size or made more symmetrical.

Why is a labiaplasty performed?

Many women experience discomfort due to (overly) large inner labia (labia minora). Enlarged labia minora can cause functional problems when they extend clearly beyond the outer labia (labia majora). Pain or discomfort may occur especially during activities such as cycling or horse riding. They can also be a source of embarrassment. In such cases, a labiaplasty may offer relief.

How is the treatment carried out?

A labiaplasty is an surgical procedure in which excess tissue of the inner labia is removed. This makes them less prominent so that they no longer extend beyond the outer labia.

As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of complications such as bleeding, infection or wound healing problems. After a labiaplasty, there are a few importaint points to be aware of:

  • The genital area contains a large number of bacteria, so good hygiene is essential to prevent wound infections.
  • For this reason, the wound in this area may sometimes reopen slightly. Fortunately, this region usually heals well.
