Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia refers to the development of breast tissue in men. It can occur in one or both breasts and is most often caused by a hormonal imbalance. The condition may develop during puberty or later in life and is usually benign, but it can be perceived as bothersome.

Diagnosis

To treat gynaecomastia appropiately, it is important to identify any underlying causes. We will therefore first suggest an evaluation with the endocrinologist. Through a thorough clinical examination, blood tests and any additional investigations, the endocrinologist will determine whether there is an underlying cause for the breast development.

An ultrasound examination is performed to assess the amount of fatty and glandular tissue. This is important for determining the further course of treatment.

Treatment

Certain forms of gynaecomastia can be treated with medication. In these cases, you will be referred to an endocrinologist.

Surgery may be considered when no clear underlying cause is found, but the gynaecomastia has a significant impact on daily functioning.

Through a small incision at the lower edge of the nipple, the glandular and fatty tisue is removed. This is supplemented with liposuction. What you can expect will be discussed in detail during the consultation with your plastic surgeon.
