Enlargement of the external ear canal
The ear canal is the passage between the outer ear and the eardrum. In some people, this canal is naturally very narrow, or becomes narrowed due to scar tissue, infections or a skin condition. This can lead to hearing loss, recurring ear infections or difficulties when using a hearing aid. The canal can be surgically widened by means of a meatoplasty.

When is a meatoplasty needed?
A meatoplasty may be recommended in case of:
- A congenitally narrow ear canal
- Narrowing due to chronic ear infections or skin conditions
- Problems with fitting or using a hearing aid
- Earwax blockages that are difficult to treat
How is the procedure performed?
A meatoplasty is a surgical procedure in which the ear canal is widened. The doctor removes part of the excess cartilage or scar tissue around the ear canal, so that it becomes more open. This improves air circulation in the ear, makes cleaning easier and may improve hearing.
Aftercare and recovery
After the procedure, the ear may be temporarily sensitive. The doctor often places a dressing, and sometimes a small pack inside the ear canal, to protect the wound. Full recovery usually takes a few weeks. It is important to keep the ear dry during this period.
