Cervical fusion
Why a cervical fusion?
The procedure is mainly performed in people with a neck hernia. This can occur at any age. The herniated is caused by wear and tear (degeneration) of an intervertebral disc. We therefore see this condition more often in older people.

Disc degeneration
How does the procedure work?
For a herniation or wear and tear in the neck, we usually perform the procedure through the front of the neck. The procedure is performed through the left side, even if the herniated is on the right. The intervertebral disc is removed completely, together with the herniated located in the spinal canal. The disc is replaced with a cage filled with a bone substitute mixed with your own bone marrow. As a final step, the cage is secured with a plate and screws.

Aftercare and recovery
During the first six weeks after the procedure, you should get plenty of rest and gradually build up your daily activities. You should wear a soft neck collar when you are outside and in busy environments, so people around you are aware that you have recently had surgery. If you are travelling in a car as a passenger, you should wear a hard neck collar.
In the brochure below you will find more information about the recovery period after a cervical fusion.
Want to know more about your rehabilitation?
After your surgery, you can attend physiotherapy to support your recovery. You will be referred for this during your first follow-up consultation with your treating doctor.
