Bone augmentation in the jaw (sinus lift)
Plan your appointment
What is a bone augmentation?
Bone augmentation is a procedure in which the jaw is widened or raised with additional bone. This may be necessary if there is not enough bone available to place a dental implant.
Consultation
At the first consultation, the surgeon examines will check whether there is sufficient jawbone. This is often assesed with a 3D scan. You will also receive information about the type of anaesthesia and possible cost.
How is the procedure carried out?
If only a small amount of bone is required, it can be taken from your own mouth (graft) or artificial bone can be used. For a larger augmentation, bone is transplanted from the pelvis or the skull. This procedure is performed under general anaesthetic.
Often, the nasal sinus has dropped down because the bone is not thick enough. In this case, a sinus lift is also required to place the new implants. The lining of the sinus is gently lifted, and the space created is filled with artificial bone.
Dental implants can be placed four to five months after this procedure.
Recovery and aftercare
After the procedure, your doctor will prescribe the necessary medication and explain the next steps.
In the case of a small reconstruction, you will usually have little discomfort. You may experience some swelling of the cheek for a few days, and the ability to open your mouth may be temporarily reduced. If bone has been taken from the pelvis or skull, you may experience more discomfort. It is normal to have stiff muscles an d to find climbing stairs difficult for about a week after the operation.
Good oral hygiene is very important for proper wound healing. Smoking delays recovery. About ten days after the procedure, the doctor will check the wound.
