Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Inflammatory bowel disease or IBD is an umbrella term for chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
What is IBD?
Inflammatory bowel diseases are chronic and have periods of flare-ups and remissions. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, relieving symptoms and preventing flare-ups.
How do we treat IBD?
Treatment of IBD focuses on reducing inflammation and controlling symptoms. This can be done in several ways:
- Medication: anti-inflammatories and immunosuppresants can help reduce disease activity.
- Diet and lifestyle: an appropriate diet and healthy lifestyle can help improve intestinal health.
- Surgery: surgery may be necessary in some cases, for example to remove damaged parts of the bowel.
Treatment is always tailored to your individual situation and depends on the severity of the disease.
Types of IBD
The two most common inflammatory bowel diseases are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
