Hip injury (orthopaedics)

The orthopaedic surgeon always first makes a diagnosis through a thorough examination with imaging (radiology) if necessary. Based on the diagnosis, the doctor prescribes a treatment, which may include medication and/or physiotherapy. At some point or with certain injuries, surgery will be necessary.

On this page you will find more information about hip injuries in which orthopaedic surgeons can treat you surgically.

The reason for hip surgery is usually wear and tear of the cartilage in the joint. Because the joint surfaces can no longer glide smoothly past each other, movement becomes increasingly difficult and painful.

Total hip replacement

A total hip replacement is placed to:

  • relieve your severe pain and
  • to allow the hip joint to move better.

The prosthesis, like the natural joint, consists of two parts:

  • a head and a stem made of metal. The stem is inserted into the shaft of the femur.
  • a bowl (cup) made of plastic, or a combination of metal and plastic, which is inserted into the pelvis.
