Rheumatology

Rheumatology is a medical discipline that deals with conditions that can affect the musculoskeletal system (joints, muscles, tendons, bone). Pain or joint swelling are the most common complaints.

What is rheumatism?

Contrary to popular belief, "rheumatism" per se does not exist and there are many different types of rheumatological problems, which can occur at all ages.

Rheumatic problems are treatable, but they require an individual approach, because of the different manifestations and evolutions. An early and correct diagnosis and early initiated and adapted treatment is important to avoid a disabling evolution.

The most typical rheumatic disease is rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a frequent problem and affects all ages. It is the typical example of inflammatory rheumatisms. If left untreated, it can lead to severe deformities and disability.

Osteoarthritis also belongs to rheumatology. It is an example of mechanical rheumatism. Loss of cartilage, which is characteristic of osteoarthritis, leads to overuse pain. Osteoarthritis becomes more common with age (wear-and-tear rheumatism), but age is not the only causative factor. Some other examples of rheumatic diseases include gout (metabolic problem) and Bechterew's disease.
