Oral and maxillofacial surgery

At the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, you can receive diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the teeth, jaws, face and oral cavity. Our department is part of the hospital's head and neck centre.

What can we help you with?

In our department, we treat conditions of the mouth, jaw and face. You can come to us to remove wisdom teeth, correct jaw deformities, treat inflammation, remove skin tumours in the face or perform reconstructive surgery. We can also help you with injuries or fractures in the face after an accident, salivary gland problems or tumours in the skin or mouth. We work closely with dentists, orthodontists and other specialists for both functional and aesthetic procedures.

What do we treat?

We offer a variety of treatments for complaints in the face, oral cavity and jaw. We work with the latest techniques and materials to make each treatment as safe and comfortable as possible. Our team will guide you step by step and be there for you throughout the process.

What is the procedure like?

We perform a variety of procedures that range from wisdom teeth removal and implant placement to more complex surgery on the jaw or facial structures. Depending on the procedure and your medical situation, you may choose local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia (narcosis).

Different forms of anaesthesia

  • Local anaesthesia: this involves numbing only the area to be treated with an injection. As a result, you feel no pain but remain conscious. This form of anaesthesia can be used for minor procedures.
  • Intravenous sedation: intravenous sedation is often preferred for procedures on the mouth, jaw and face. It is located between local anaesthesia and full anaesthesia. Sedation provides relaxation, reduces anxiety and pain and prevents you from having to undergo general anaesthesia.
  • General anaesthesia: this puts you completely asleep. This is necessary for complex procedures that require you to lie completely still.
