Tilt table test

A tilt test or tilt table test is a medical examination used to identify the cause of fainting or dizziness. It is mainly performed in people who experience repeated loss of consciousness with no clear explanation.

Why is a tilt table test performed?

The test helps to determine the cause of your fainting spells. This may be due to a sudden drop in blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension), a slowing or pause in your heart rate, or a combination of both.

How does the test proceed?

During the test, you lie strapped down on a special tilt table. The table is gradually tilted to an angle of about 60 to 70 degrees, placing you in an almost upright position. This allows the doctor to better observe what happens in your body when you move to a standing position.

Throughout the test, your heart rate and blood pressure are continuously monitored. In some cases, medication is given to enhance the effect of the test and trigger a response.
