24-hour blood pressure monitoring

A 24-hour blood pressure monitoring test measures your blood pressure automatically over a full day and night. This gives your doctor a realistic picture of your blood pressure, rather than a single reading taken during a consultation.

Why have 24-hour blood pressure monitoring?

This test is often recommended if there is:

  • a suspicion of white-coat hypertension or high blood pressure caused by stress at the doctor's office
  • insufficient drop in blood pressure during sleep
  • a need to evaluate how well blood pressure medication is working
  • unclear or strongly fluctuating blood pressure readings
  • a suspicion of blood pressure peaks during moments of stress

How does the examination work?

You will be given a blood pressure cuff for your upper arm and a small portable device attached to a belt or shoulder strap. During the day, the device usually measures your blood pressure every 15 to 30 minutes during the day, and at night every 30 to 60 minutes. You keep a diary in which you note your activities. After 24 hours, you return the device. The data are then analysed and interpreted by your doctor.

What should you keep in mind?

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing around the upper arm
  • Try to keep your arm relaxed and still during a measurement
  • Avoid heavy physical effort and do not shower of bathe while the device is connected
  • Try to follow your normal daily routine

What is the benefit?

This test provides a more reliable overall picture of your blood pressure. This is important to confirm or rule out a diagnosis, adjust medication correctly and prevent long-term complications.
