PEG probe

A PEG probe (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy probe) provides direct access to your stomach. This can replace the path that food normally takes from the mouth to the stomach. Through a PEG tube, tube feedings, water and medications can be administered.

How is a PEG probe placed?

The placement of the probe is done under local anesthesia and is performed using a gastroscope. This is a flexible tube with a camera at the end that is inserted through the throat to look into the stomach. An opening is made in the abdominal wall through which the PEG probe can be inserted.

Preparing for the examination

If you take blood thinners, it is best to stop taking them a few days before the procedure. Discuss this with your doctor beforehand. Never stop your medication on your own initiative. Starting from six hours before the examination you must remain sober.

Aftercare

The doctor will decide when you can eat and drink again and leave the hospital. Daily disinfection of the wound is required. After ten days, the probe must be turned daily to prevent ingrowth.
