Hysterectomy (laparoscopically assisted)

During a laparoscopically assisted hysterectomy, the gynaecologist removes your uterus using keyhole surgery.

What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is an operation to remove the uterus. In this procedure, the uterus is removed using keyhole surgery. Your gynaecologist will discuss the procedure with beforehand and explain which technique will be used.

What happens during the procedure?

A hysterectomy is performed under general anaesthesia. During the operation, the gynaecologist removes the uterus. In a laparoscopically assisted hysterectomy, most of the procedure is carried out using keyhole surgery.

The gynaecologist makes several small incisions in the abdomen. A camera and fine surgical instruments are inserted through these openings. This allows the gynaecologist to detach and remove the uterus. Depending on your situation, the cervix, fallopian tubes or ovaries may also be removed.

Recovery and aftercare

If everything goes well, you can leave hospital after one day. Take it easy for four to six weeks and avoid lifting or carrying heavy objects. You should also avoid sexual intercourse for four to six weeks after the procedure.
