Jaw joint pain

Jaw joint pain results from irritation in the jaw joint. Symptoms range from mild to severe and can cause problems when speaking, chewing or yawning.

Symptoms

The symptoms below may occur:

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw joint or surrounding muscles
  • A clicking or popping sound when moving the jaw
  • Difficulty opening the mouth
  • Pain or pressure in the ear or around the eyes
  • Headache
  • Toothache
  • Dizziness

Cause

There are several factors that may contribute to jaw joint pain. The jaw muscles may be overstrained by chewing gum, eating or teeth grinding. You may also have an injury or arthritis to the jaw joint. Stress, an ill-fitting denture or misaligned teeth can also lead to jaw joint pain.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the condition. The surgeon may prescribe medication to reduce pain or inflammation. Applying heat or cold compresses to the jaw joint can help relieve pain and relax the muscles.

There are exercises to strengthen the jaw muscles and improve mobility. The surgeon can prescribe these for you.

If dental problems are the cause, orthodontic treatment may be useful to correct them. Surgery is rarely necessary.
