The skin around the vagina, including the outer and inner labia, is called the vulva. Various conditions can occur in this area, such as vaginal pain or changes to the skin of the vulva.
What are the symptoms of vulvar conditions?
You may experience the following symptoms:
- Vaginal pain
- A burning or stinging sensation
- Irritation or sensitivity
- Changes to the skin of the vulva
These symptoms may be constant or come and go.
Vaginal pain
Some women experience chronic vaginal pain. One possible cause of this is vulvodynia.
Vulvodynia is chronic vaginal pain. It may feel like burning, stinging or sharp pain and can affect your daily life.
Vulvodynia can have different causes, such as:
- Hormonal changes
- Inflammation
- Long-term vaginal infections
- Local irritation
- Nerve-related problems
- Pelvic floor problems
Skin conditions of the vulva
Skin conditions affecting the vulva can also cause symptoms. You may notice changes to the skinor irritation in the area. A gynaecological examination can help determine the cause and the most approriate treatment.
